I've been doing SEO for over 20 years, and I've heard "SEO is dead" more times than I can count. It was dead when Google cracked down on link schemes. It was dead when mobile took over. Now it's dead because of ChatGPT and AI Overviews. It still isn't dead. But a lot of lazy SEO is.
Is SEO dead because of AI search?
No. AI tools still need sources, and they pull those sources from the web. The sites they trust are the ones with clear structure, real expertise, and a consistent identity across the internet. That's SEO. It's just being judged by a stricter reader.
What actually stopped working
- Thin content written for keywords. AI can generate generic answers on its own. It doesn't need your 500-word page that says nothing.
- Chasing rankings without a clear brand. If search engines can't tell who you are, AI tools won't recommend you.
- Set-it-and-forget-it listings. A Google Business Profile that hasn't been touched in a year tells everyone you're not paying attention.
What matters now
The fundamentals got more important, not less:
- Answer real questions directly. Lead with the answer, then explain. That's how you win featured snippets and AI citations.
- Build your entity. Consistent name, details, and links across your site, your profiles, and the web. Schema markup that matches reality.
- Show real experience. Specifics, photos, opinions, and proof that a real business with real people is behind the page.
- Keep showing up. Fresh reviews, active profiles, and content that gets updated when things change.
The bottom line
AI search raised the bar. The businesses that did SEO the right way all along are in great shape. The ones that relied on shortcuts are finding out the hard way.
